Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming is an ancient  practice that features in traditions throughout history, across the globe. The range of benefits is wide and it can be used to address acute and chronic conditions, as well as improve your general health and wellbeing. Steaming opens up the blood vessels and allows the properties of the steeped herbs to directly enter the bloodstream.

Whether you need to address your hormonal balance, cleanse an infection, tone and moisturise the vaginal tissue or clear stagnation of the uterus and improve blood circulation, steaming can help. It is also a deeply nourishing self-care practice that strengthens your intuitive and loving connection with your sacred womb space.

The herbs are all natural, 100% certified organic wherever possible.

Crystals are not included in any of the packages

The Blends

Designed for yoni steaming, these herbs are organic, safe to drink and are deeply nourishing. Using the herbs in the days leading up to your bleed may be particularly helpful and supportive. Please read all the provided information and guidelines, including when is the best time to steam.

Which Blend and When?

Whether you are menstruating or not, I encourage you to open yourself up to your own intuition around which archetype is calling to you most strongly. That might be the one that corresponds to your current stage in your cycle, your time of life or the one that piques your interest most. Or it might actually be one that feels blocked, unavailable or unappealing to you. This is an opportunity for you to explore your feminine landscape, so you can either work through them sequentially, or with specific energetics/symptoms in mind.

How it works

You will need to sit, kneel, or lean comfortably for at least ten minutes, but preferably 20-30 minutes, with the pot about 20-30 cm directly below your perineal area. You can purchase a special yoni steaming stool or box, which is designed specifically for this, but it can also be done by simply propping yourself up in an open, seated position, squatting or kneeling with legs apart, leaning forward over a bed, chair or sofa, or pot placed into the toilet.

It is important to use a small ceramic, enamel, stoneware, stainless steel or glass pot for your steaming, so as to minimise the chance of contamination by harmful metals and plastics into the blend. Cast iron, aluminium, teflon coated and plastic are not suitable. Create as much insulation around the pot as possible, for example with a towel, to prevent it cooling too quickly.  It’s also beneficial to use a lid to keep all the beautiful volatile oils safe until you’re ready to use them.

Brew the herbs in your pot of boiling water and once you are comfortably seated over the pot, cover your legs with a towel to trap the steam for the time required.

The gentle heat and moisture of the yoni steam permeates the external perineal region (vulva, clitoris, labia, urethra, vagina and anus) and carries medicinal plant properties into the inner organs and tissues. The resultant  vasodilation increases circulation to the exposed area, as well as the uterine blood vessels that connect to the vaginal canal, cervix, and uterus.

  • Yoni steaming should be avoided during pregnancy as it can cause opening of the cervix and miscarriage. However, after 38 weeks, when the baby is fully developed and ready to be born, steaming can be used for labour preparation. Speak to me directly about this.

  • I would recommend my postpartum sitz bath blend, which can be used as a douche or in the bath with your baby.

Speak to me directly if you’re in any doubt so we can discuss this

I would recommend the Mother blend for this time in your life.

Be aware that some herbs like Mugwort and Sage are best avoided while breastfeeding because they can affect milk supply. Please speak to me directly about this if in doubt.

  • Steaming may be used for erectile dysfunction,
  • prostate health,
  • reduction of an enlarged benign prostate,
  • penile or scrotal infections such as candida

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO STEAM?

This depends on your reason for steaming. As a general guide, steaming once a week is beneficial with an additional three days in a row leading up to your bleed. This is particularly effective in working with a specific pathology and/or intention. It may be indicated to steam regularly over a longer period of time (once a week), or intensively over a shorter time period (i.e. every day for a week). Speak directly to me if in any doubt.

It is important to note that steaming is NOT recommended under the following circumstances:

PLEASE NOTE: If you are experiencing extreme menstrual issues I would strongly advise booking in for a full 60 minute yoni steam consultation as this will provide you with the most appropriate herbal prescription for you.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are NOT recommended for vaginal steaming as they are massively concentrated in strength and can be irritating or drying to the delicate tissues of our genital area. It is recommended to work with fresh or dried herbs or water only.

Instructions for Steaming:

As with any herbal or alternative medicine, the care and intention with which you approach your healing is a key factor in your body’s positive response.

THE POWER OF YOUR INTENTION WILL BE AMPLIFIED WHEN YOU HOLD CLARITY OF PURPOSE AND TRUST IN THE NEW DIRECTION YOU ARE TAKING.

Yoni steaming can be practised in a group or on your own as a personal ceremony and it is worthwhile preparing an inspiring, relaxing sacred space so you can fully drop in to your womb space and be with the sensations of your experience. You could light candles, burn incense, play soothing music, meditate or journal. It’s important to really honour the journey you are about to commence.

  • Your medicinal herbs.
  • A ceramic, enamel, stoneware, stainless steel or glass pot with a lid NB It is important to minimise the chance of contamination by harmful metals and plastics so cast iron, aluminium, teflon coated and plastic pots are not suitable
  • Around 1 litre (or 4 cups) of fresh filtered water for the infusion plus a further ½ litre which you can put in a flask and keep aside to top up the steam if it cools quickly
  • A towel, skirt or cloak to wrap around your waist in order to funnel the steam and not disperse the heat (this is not necessary if you own a steaming box
  • Cushions or blankets for your comfort
  • A tea towel to wrap around the pot, to keep it warm and protect your skin
  • Make sure to be hydrated before, during and after your steaming session. Make your favourite herbal tea infusion, juice or simply have some water to hand
  • Boil 4 cups or 1 litre of water, (plus an additional amount to put in a separate flask if you wish to top up the hot water during your steam)
  • Prepare your space for steaming. You will need cushions or blankets in place for your knees if you are intending to kneel
  • Measure out 25g of herbs (this should be around 1/6th of the total in the bag)
  • Holding your herbs up to your heart, set your intention for the ritual
  • Place the herbs in your steaming pot with 1 litre of boiling water
  • Cover the pot with the lid and allow the herbs to simmer gently for 5 minutes
  • Put the further ½ litre of boiling water in a thermos flask and place it in your steaming space
  • Once brewed, place the pot on the floor in your steaming space in or under your steaming box or stool and onto a tea-light burner if you have one to keep it warm. Wrap a folded tea towel around it if you don’t have a tea-light burner
  • Wrap your towel, gown or cover-up around yourself
  • Remove the lid of the pot and check if the steam is a good temperature (gentle and soothing heat only)
  • Sit or kneel over the pot in such a way that you can relax for 20-30 minutes and draw the towel or robe around you completely, so the steam cannot escape
  • If you are using a steaming stool or box, sit with your entire perineal and genital area over the opening
  • Top up the hot water if it cools too quickly using the flask you prepared
  • Once you have completed your steaming, offer the herbs back to the Earth with gratitude.
  • If you are prone to abnormal uterine bleeding (history of spontaneous bleeding, spotting in between periods, short menstrual cycles of 27 days or less)
  • If you are prone to heat sensitivity e.g. night sweats, hot flushes
  • If you are aged under 12 years old
  • If you are using birth control such as IUD, patches, implants
